Ateneo de Manila University extended its unbeaten slate to nine games as it overcame a gritty Adamson University, 80-74, to secure at least a playoff for a Final Four slot in Season 82 University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) men’s basketball tournament Wednesday night at the Araneta Coliseum.
Thirdy Ravena led the Blue Eagles’ balanced attack with a season-high 23 points to go along with five assists and four rebounds as Ateneo claimed its 19th straight win dating back to last season.
Will Navarro had another solid contribution for the defending champions with 11 points, eight rebounds and four blocks while Matt Nieto chipped in 11 markers and five assists.
“Obviously, Adamson really came out with fire and they had a great game plan for the 40 minutes of really tough basketball,” Blue Eagles head coach Tab Baldwin said.
“First half, we were pretty ordinary. But we survived Adamson in the endgame as we made the right plays,” he added.
Jerrick Ahanmisi and Val Chauca had 17 points apiece for the Soaring Falcons, who absorbed their fourth straight loss to drop to 3-6 in the team standings.
Six-foot-11 Congolese center Lenda Douanga poured 13 points and seven boards for Adamson.
