Taduran: Drug convicts to island prison

ACT-ICS Party-list Rep. Nina Taduran.

Assistant Majority Floor Leader and ACT-CIS Party-list Rep. Niña Taduran on Monday proposed that drug lords detained at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) be transferred to an island prison in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

“It’s no secret that big time drug lords inside NBP enjoy special privileges like their own kubols and other comforts normally denied to ordinary prisoners because they literally ‘own’ the corrupt prison guards and officials,” Taduran said.

Taduran said inmates could not do what they are doing in the state penitentiary in a penal colony in the WPS as there are no cellphone signal and no guards to bribe there.

She also said that since members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines are already patrolling the area, the military would only need to make sure that no one leaves or enters the prison islands.

Taduran said the scheme would also help the Philippine government assert its claim over the WPS.

“The move would in fact solve not only all the problems hounding the New Bilibid Prison at the moment, but also help the Philippine government assert its claim over these islands in the West Philippine sea by populating them with prisoners… Filipino prisoners.”

Meanwhile, all other prisoners should be transferred to other penal colonies and the NBP should be sold to private sector, said Taduran.

“Nasa likod lang ng Ayala Alabang ang NBP, mas pakikinabangan ng pamahalaan kung ibebenta na lang ang lupang ‘yan, kaysa patirahin diyan ang mga pasaway na druglords,” said Taduran.
