San Miguel Beer completed an upset over twice-to-beat NorthPort with 90-88 win to wrap up their quarterfinal series in the Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
SMB import Chris McCullough led the team while Marcio Lassiter chipped in significant numbers for the Beermen who will face the survivor of the Blackwater and Rain or Shine quarterfinal matchup in the best-of-three semifinals.
McCullough finished with 31 points and 11 rebounds while Lassiter, who was subbed out and was taken to the hospital in the second quarter after hurting his knee after a collision, scored 11.
Arwind Santos finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Beermen.
Santos drained a trey to cut the Batang Pier’s lead to one, 85-86, in the final 1:14 and sank a lay-in after Chris Ross stole the ball to snatch the lead for his team, 87-86.
The Beermen never looked back as McCullough split his freebies for the final score.
“We’re lucky we got all the breaks especially in the last three possessions,” San Miguel coach Leo Austria said.
“Inspite of being number seven, I think our experience helped us a lot especially on the stretch of the game. We know how to lose and how to win,” Austria added.
For the losing team, Garvo Lanete topscored with 22 points while Moala Tautuaa added 20 points and six rebounds.
Import Prince Ibeh scored 15 points and 20 rebounds as they bowed out of the Commissioner’s Cup.
