The presumptive Speakers and Majority Leader of the House of Representatives declared their unity and promised to address the needs of the people in a meeting Sunday night.
“We are united,” Taguig City Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano said at the all party caucus at the Luna Cafe in Bonifacio Global City.
“You will now see a House of Representatives with congressmen who not only smells good but will feel the people and respond to their needs,” added Cayetano, whom President Duterte had chosen to be Speaker together with Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Jay Velasco under a term-sharing scheme.
Cayetano, who is supposed to serve as Speaker for the first 15 months, also assured that the House will be friendly and responsive to the different government agencies, to the Executive, the Senate and the Judiciary.
“We’re just trying to show everyone that Congress is united. We want to be a unified Congress so we can push the legislative agenda of the President,” said Velasco, who is supposed to serve the remaining 21 months of the Speaker’s term after Cayetano finishes his term.
“We’ll make sure that we’ll deliver the required laws so we will be all going in the direction the President wishes,” Velasco added.
Presumptive Majority Leader and Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez said, “We’re here uniting with the leaders of the House of Representatives for the 18th Congress. We resolve to work for the Filipino people for the betterment of their lives and for the Republic of the Philippines, putting the Duterte administration’s legislative agenda foremost in our minds in our work attitude and in our ethic to achieve the same.”
Cayetano also mentioned that they have the support of Davao City 1st District Rep. Paolo “Pulong” Duterte, who agreed to be the Deputy Speaker for Political Affairs.
