Phoenix weathered a 14-point deficit in the third quarter and the ejection of coach Louie Alas on two consecutive technical fouls in the last canto to eke out a 111-103 win over Barangay Ginebra in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Friday night.
Matthew Wright led the Fuel Masters with 32 points, including 9 points in the last 6 minutes that kept the Gin Kings at bay and two free throws to ice his team’s fourth win in 8 games.
The defeat of Ginebra also created a 3-way tie for fifth place with Alaska and Phoenix which also sports a 4-4 win-loss card.
After overhauling a double-digit deficit, Phoenix zoomed to an 11-point lead in the third quarter and never looked back even with Alas’ ejection with 8:54 left in the game. Assistant coach Topex Robinson took over Alas’ chores.
Ginebra import Justin Brownlee’s freethrows with 7:27 remaining put his team 2 points ahead, 93-95, but Justin Chua, Jason Perkins and Wright orchestrated a 6-0 run that took the fight out of the Gin Kings.
