NBI indicts 10 in dialysis scam

THE NBI head office in Manila.

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has indicted 10 people suspected of collecting from PhilHealth payments for the dialysis of dead kidney patients.

Among those indicted for alleged estafa through falsification of documents and violation of the PhilHealth law before the Department of Justice (DoJ) were Dr. Bryan Christopher Sy, co-owner of the WellMed Dialysis and Laboratory Center Corp. that had charged PhilHealth for the bogus dialysis of dead patients. Sy was arrested and detained by NBI agents on Monday.

Also indicted were former WellMed employees Liezel Santos de Leon and Edwin Roberto who reported the scam to PhilHealth.

The filing of charges was in line with the directive of President Duterte and the DoJ’s Dept. Order No. 287 issued by DoJ Secretary Menardo Guevarra last week.

The order calls for the investigation and conduct of case build up on the irregular claims for payment of dialysis and other medical treatment.
