NUP pushes Cayetano for Speaker

Former Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano.

National Unity Party (NUP) announced today that the members of their political group will support former Foreign Affairs secretary and Taguig representative-elect Alan Peter Cayetano in his bid for House of Representatives’ top post.

In a statement released Monday, party chairman Ronaldo Puno enlisted characteristics of their desired speaker for the next Congress.

“For these reasons, the NUP leadership is supporting for Speaker of the House of Representatives former congressman, former senator, former Foreign Affairs Secretary and now congressman-elect Alan Peter Cayetano, who is someone all congressmen can count on and look up to,” Puno said.

He said that the NUP looks for a candidate that has proven his “competence and has proven ability to support and help carry out the programs and policies of President Rodrigo Duterte.”

Puno cited that they “worked” for the election of former President and current Speaker Gloria Macapgal-Arroyo in her current post.

NUP believes they “provided the country a great service” by installing Arroyo crediting her government experience in the executive and legislative branches of the government aside from her background on foreign relations.

Puno said they will support a candidate that has the broadest government experience and one who can “eloquently represent” Congress and the country in interactions with foreign equivalents.

He added that they look for a speaker who has a “principled approach” in trusting the institution aside from protecting its integrity.

These characteristics are “essential” for NUP’s core values which they are fighting for.

The political party has 28 candidates in the 18th Congress, according to PBA Party-list Rep. Jericho Nograles.

Cayetano is one of the five candidates vying for the position.

He is going against former speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco, returning Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez and Pampanga Rep. Aurelio Gonzales. Hananeel Bordey
