FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup bid ends

The Gilas men's under 23 team.

Gilas Pilipinas men’s squad crashed out after absorbing back-to-back setbacks to Thailand and Qatar in the FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup qualifying round Wednesday at the BBG Maxcity Changsha Shopping Mall in Changsha, China.

The Filipino dribblers opened their bid with an 11-14 setback to the Thais before suffering a 17-21 loss to the Qataris to kiss their championship chances goodbye.

Ricci Rivero, a veteran of several 3×3 tournaments, sat out the crucial game against Qatar after suffering an ankle sprain in their match against the Thais.

With Rivero at the sidelines, RJ Abarrientos delivered 12 points while Rhayyan Amsali and Barkley Ebona chipped in three and two markers, respectively.

The Gilas boys will continue their campaign against Iran and Samoa on Thursday to determine their final placing in this prestigious 22-nation tourney bannered by powerhouse China, Mongolia, Iran and South Korea.

Meanwhile, Gilas Pilipinas women’s team remains alive following a 21-1 win over Samoa.

Afril Bernardino tallied eight points while Clare Castro scored six markers for the Filipinas, who crushed the Samoans by 20 points to post the largest margin in 3×3 history.
