The Department of Finance (DoF) on Wednesday pressed the Senate to pass the proposed measure on additional sin taxes on tobacco products.
DOF Secretary Carlos Dominguez met with the senators at the Senate before Wednesday’s session.
Senate Majority Floor Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri said the senators vowed to do their best to pass the measure calling for additional P60 excise tax on tobacco products.
“We discussed only sin taxes particularly tobacco tax. The secretary reiterated the need for additional funding for our new Universal health care measure as we have a large budget deficit for that program,” said Zubiri.
“We the senators all agreed to do our best to pass this before the break. Sponsorship will start on Monday,” he added.
The 17th Congress only has five session days before the sine die adjournment next month.
