Former Speaker Pantaleon “Bebot” Alvarez’s first act after his successful reelection as representative of the first district of Davao del Norte was to seek the unity of the House of Representatives by an offer to patch up with reelected Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte.

“Now that elections are over, I offer my hand in peace to heal our deep and divisive wounds,” Alvarez said in a statement released yesterday.

With a fresh mandate, Alvarez said that he will seek again the Speakership in the House of Representatives.

He cited a quote saying, “A house divided against itself cannot stand… though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. We are not enemies, but friends. The mystic chords of memory will swell when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.”

After encouraging the winning congressmen to unite and cooperate with each other in the 18th Congress, he acknowledged President Duterte and his daughter Sara in achieving a peaceful elections in Davao del Norte.

A spat over political direction erupted between Alvarez and the President’s daughter in 2018 over the forming of the regional party Hugpong ng Pagababago (HnP).

Grateful for win

In his statement, Alvarez expressed gratitude to the younger Duterte for leading HnP as its chairman.

“Most of all, I wish to thank President Rodrigo Duterte, chairman of PDP (Partido Demokratiko Pilipino) and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, chairman of HNP, for their leadership, both at the national and local level, in making sure that the 2019 elections in Davao del Norte was peaceful, orderly, and fair,” he said.

He expressed his willingness to “rally together for the cause of unity and progress” in Davao region and the country.

“Let us consolidate our efforts in making true change and uplift the lives of our countrymen,” he added.

In the same statement, Alvarez thanked his constituents for their continuous support to his reelection bid.

“I convey my deepest appreciation and thanks to the people of Davao Del Norte, a province I call my home, for their support. Truly, the will of the people was expressed with the outcome of the elections held last 13 May 2019,” Alvarez said.

Change continues

He added he is grateful to the people who trusted and voted for candidates who ran under the PDP and vowed these people will be pivotal in bringing change in their province.

“As your elected leaders, we shall never cease working hard in providing the best and genuine service,” he added.

Alvarez won his second term, noting that the true will of the people won in the recent polls.
The lawmaker also thanked his constituents for electing other candidates under the ruling PDP party.

“Definitely their votes shall bring forth change to our beloved province. As your elected leaders, we shall never cease working hard in providing the best and genuine service,” said Alvarez.
