The Manila Police District (MPD) on Tuesday, 16 April, heightened security around churches in time for the annual Visita Iglesia on Maundy Thursday.

MPD District Director Brig. Gen. Vicente Danao Jr. said that the instruction stemmed from the Notre-Dame fire which destroyed parts of the iconic cathedral.

He added that they don’t want to be laid back as terrorist groups might threaten the serenity of the Holy Week.

Danao also called on the public to remain vigilant and to immediately alert the police if they notice any suspicious persons or objects in their areas.
