Pres’l aide’s chopper landing disrupts sports

A helicopter carrying Presidential Adviser for the Visayas Michael Dino landed unexpectedly at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City on Tuesday, 8 January, and disrupted an ongoing sports event in the track oval.

A video of the landing and Dino coming out of the helicopter is going viral after being posted on social media.

Presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo said the pilot and not the passenger should be blamed for the incident.

“I think the pilot did not know there was a game going on. So, while they were waiting, he asked where the restroom is and he went there. That’s the fault of the pilot, not of the passenger,” Panelo said in a Palace press briefing on Thursday.

“The pilot should have known that. Kasi you are supposed to have clearance, eh. Magpapaalam ka muna kung saan ka pupunta,” Panelo added.

Office of the Presidential Assistant to the Visayas (OPAV) Assistant Secretary Jonji Gonzales, in an eaelier statement, explained that Dino was bound for Batangas and was just told that the helicopter will briefly land to pick up other passengers.

Dino “had no way of knowing” there was an ongoing event at the Philsports Complex, according to Gonzales.

Meanwhile, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) will call for the pilot and crew of the chopper to get their side on the incident.

CAAP spokesman Eric Apolonio said the the pilot may be slapped with sanctions if proven to have breached protocols and compromised the safety of the passengers and the public. (Video from Aerial Media PH)
