Self-defense toothbrush

Move over pepper spray. There’s a new self-defense weapon civilians can use against attackers or robbers: A toothbrush.

Using the oral hygiene implement, a lady taxi passenger saved herself from the cab driver who tried to rob her midnight on Monday in Sauyo, Novaliches, Quezon City.

Based on the police account of the incident, when the driver, Zaldy Macatiag, declared a holdup, he started hitting the victim with a metal pipe. But the woman fought back, instinctively grabbed a toothbrush inside her bag and stabbed the eye of the attacker with it.

The tip of the toothbrush handle pierced Macatiag’s eye so bad lulling the attack and allowing the passenger to get out of the car and call the police.

The suspect was later arrested in a hospital where he sought treatment for his injured eye which needed surgery. Making matters worse are the robbery-holdup and frustrated murder charges slapped on him.

The victim was also hospitalized to get treated for the injury she suffered in the attack. At least she is alive, thanks to her toothbrush which came in handy in an emergency situation.

With the incident, the toothbrush has earned a reputation of not only cleaning teeth but also brushing one criminal off the street.
