UP in UAAP basketball finals


University of the Philippines-Diliman (UP) is returning to the UAAP men’s basketball championship after a 32-year absence.

The Fighting Maroons outlasted the Soaring Falcons in overtime, 89-87, in their Final Four knockout match Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum to set a finals battle against the Blue Eagles in the UAAP 81 men’s basketball tournament.

Andres Paul C. Desiderio sank a jumper with 6.6 seconds in the extension period to break an 87-all tie and Jerom Lastimosa of Adamson University missed a three-point shot as time expired sealing the win for the Fighting Maroons.

Earlier in regulation time, Lastimosa nailed a three-point shot with 2.6 seconds left to tie the score at 78-all. Desiderio then missed a three-point shot sending the game into overtime.
