Top rookie Christian Standhardinger leads the Best Player of the Conference race while Mike Harris, Justin Brownlee and Eugene Phelps figure in a close battle for the Best Import award nearing the semi-finals of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Governors’ Cup.
As San Miguel Beer’s main big man June Mar Fajardo went down with a shin injury for two long months, Standhardinger stepped up big time and showed his true potential with monster double-double averages of 23.3 points and 13.6 rebounds on top of 1.6 assists and 0.9 steals in the elimination round.
The 6-foot-8 Standhardinger leads the league both in points and rebounds to amass a total 43.1 statistical points (SP).
Ginebra’s Japeth Aguilar, meanwhile, is at distant second place with 34.8 SP behind his 19.9 points and 6.9 rebounds average per ball game.
Competing the top five candidates are Chris Banchero (34.2) of Alaska, Stanley Pringle (34.0) of Northport and Calvin Abueva (31.9) of Phoenix Petroleum.
Meanwhile, Mike Harris of Alaska, Justin Brownlee of Ginebra and Eugene Phelps of Phoenix are in a tight race for the Best Import plum.
Harris holds a slim lead with his 60.4 SPs behind a big double-double average of 29.8 points and 21.7 rebounds while Brownlee (59.1) and Phelps (58.0) are just lurking behind.
