Christopher Lawrence “Kuya Bong” Go on Saturday said he wants to institutionalize the protection of media as they play a crucial role in helping solve the country’s problems.
“Gusto kong sabihin na kayo ang isa sa aking tulay para malaman ko ang mga hinanaing ng sambayanan. Kayo ang nagsisilbing taga-dala ng impormasyon na pwedeng magamit para masolusyonan ang mga problema ng bayan,” Go said during his speech in the Mindanao Media Safety and Security Summit held yesterday.
(I want to say that you are one of my bridges for me to know the grievances of the public. You serve as bringer of information that can be used to solve the country’s problems.)
Go also said that media was instrumental in helping him formulate his legislative agenda, including pushing for sports development for the Filipino youth.
“Because of the media and how much it was creating waves to our youth, I am strongly pursuing sports as a tool to veer the youth away from bad vices,” he said
Go said that given the crucial role of media, members of the press have to be protected, and he plans to strengthen media security through legislation if elected in the Senate, referring to President Rodrigo Duterte’s Administrative Order No. 1 establishing the Presidential Task Force on Media Security.
“You have to be protected because you uphold the truth. There are a lot of people who want to abuse this power of the press and abuse your ability to spread truthful news,” Go said in his speech.
“It is indeed important for us and the rest of the Filipinos to read credible, accurate and fact-based news. The truth must prevail, always,” Go said.
