Malacañang lauds pencak silat team

Malacañang on Thursday congratulated the national pencak silat team and members who won bronze medals in the 2018 Asian Games.

Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque praised Cherry Mae Regalado, who bagged the bronze medal in the women’s singles, and Almohaidib Abad, who won a bronze medal in the men’s singles final.

Roque likewise welcomed Dines Dumaan and Jefferson Rhey Loon, who each won a bronze medal in men’s pencak silat.

Other members of the team present during the press briefing were Princesslyn Enopia, Precious Jade Bore, Alvin Campus, Alfau Jan Abad, James El Mayagma, Alexius Martin Patano, Christopher Yabut, and Mier Candor.

Pencak silat is the indigenous martial arts of Indonesia and pencak silat Filipino athletes delivered the most medals with four bronze.

“Kaya nga po nandito sila ngayon to promote the awareness na we could actually succeed in sports that are more apt for our height and our backgrounds and physique. Itong pencak silat po is ang Indonesian game… It’s a combination of karate, taekwondo, and judo. Kayang kaya po ito. Sila po ‘yung pinakamaraming napanalunang medalya,” Roque noted.
