Salo backs 14th month pay

House Assistant Majority Leader and Kabayan Partylist Rep. Ron P. Salo said Friday he supports Senate President Tito Sotto’s proposal to grant 14th month pay to private sector workers.

“KABAYAN Partylist is of the view that 14th month pay should cover all government employees (national and local) and all private sector employees regardless of whether they are regular, contractual, casual or job order. The law should benefit everyone, both in the public and private sectors,” said Salo in a statement.

As to the timing of the proposed pay benefit, Salo said the 14th month pay should be given in November just before Christmas, while the 13th month pay should be given in May before the school opening for most students.

Salo said the Department of Budget and Management and the Department of Finance should calculate how much it would cost the government to provide 14th month pay and to identify possible sources of funding so it could be properly deliberated by lawmakers.

Currently, government offices and in some private companies split the 13th month pay into two, with the first half disbursed in May while the second half is disbursed in December.
