A major crackdown launched by the Dubai police against criminal groups resulted to the arrest of members of four separate gangs and the recovery of stolen luxury 46 vehicles with a total worth of Dhs 11 million ($2.97 million).
According to Major General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Chief Commander of Dubai police, the four gangs were utilizing the latest technological gadgets in their operations to steal luxury vehicles, as well as in the effort to smuggle them outside of the United Arab Emirates.
In a statement released Saturday, Al Marri hailed the efforts and professionalism of the police officers involved in the operations as well as the forensic experts who analyzed the data that helped them establish the identity of the gang members.
Lt. Colonel Adel Al Jukar, Director of the Criminal Investigation Department, said the operation against the gang members was prompted by the findings of the data analysis center of the Dubai police showing similar modus operandi were used in various car thefts in different emirates.
Acting on the information the Dubai police formed several task forces with specific assignments for a particular role in the wide scale operations meant to catch the criminals.
Follow up investigations indicated that four separate gangs composed of different nationalities were involved in the car theft incidents.
The Dubai police managed to piece together from various evidence they gathered the modus operandi of the gangs.
The gangs apparently entered the country on visit visas to target luxury cars. They use gadgets that could override the cars’ computer systems to start the engine and drive away to smuggle the vehicles.
An operation coordinated with Sharjah and Ajman police, resulted to the arrest of several gang members and the seizure of17 stolen luxury cars about to be smuggled on a cargo ship.
Thirteen more cars were subsequently recovered in some containers at a storehouse in Dubai, as well as 12 more cars hidden in different parts of UAE. Four more the gangs have been using for their illegal activity were also recovered by the police.
However, the Dubai police has yet to reveal the identity as well as the specific nationalities of the arrested car members of the car theft gangs.
