Hot on the heels of “Avengers: Infinity War,” another superhero sequel is drawing comic book fans by the hordes in Philippine cinemas nationwide.
“Deadpool 2,” the much awaited second installment of the highest grossing R-rated film of all time, has been making headlines even weeks before it opened in cinemas largely due to the outrageous ways it has been promoted by lead star Ryan Reynolds.
Although Reynolds did not include Manila in his Deadpool promo tour, fans of the wisecracking anti-hero with mutant powers are making sure that his presence is very much felt.
A group of cosplayers called the Deadpool Army, in particular, got together at the Sky Park in SM Aura Premier for the first ever “Deadpool Fan Event” in the country.
Said cosplayers gathered in their favorite X-Force character costumes and joined exciting activities and trivia games where the lucky ones among them ended up winning some nice prizes. Later, these fans along with selected members of the media and the blogging community were treated to an exclusive advanced screening of “Deadpool 2.”
The Deadpool Army again turned up in droves at another advanced screening, this time in Glorietta 4.
“Deadpool 2” picks up where the last film left off as it now finds Wade Wilson a.k.a. Deadpool going global as a mercenary who takes down criminals He later finds himself teaming up, first with X-Men Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead then with a group of new mutants (Bedlam, Shatterstar and Domino) that will later become the X-Force as they try to protect a young mutant named Firefist from Cable, another mutant from the future.
Early critical reception to “Deadpool 2” has som far been favorable as the film currently holds an 86 percent approval rating at film review aggregate, Rotten Tomatoes and “generally favorable reviews” at Metacritic, another review aggregator.
Although official box office figures have yet to be released, “Deadpool 2” is expected to gross between US$305 to US$350 million worldwide.
In the Philippines, the film opened Wednesday, May 16 and currently dominates most theaters including the top cinema chains of SM Cinema, Ayala Cinema and Robinsons Movieworld.
SM Cinema encourages fans to watch the films in its IMAX theaters. With the movie shown on IMAX screens, audiences will be immersed with the expanded 1.9:1 aspect ratio because “Deadpool 2” was digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience with proprietary IMAX DMR (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images, coupled with IMAX’s customized theater geometry and powerful digital audio, create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.
And Deadpool himself is not done making his presence felt. Fans can expect to see more of him this weekend as he hits the cinema lobby of SM North EDSA on Saturday, May 19 and at the cinema lobby of SM Mall of Asia on Sunday, May 20 as part of his “Anti-Hero Tour.”
