THE House of Representatives and the Senate on Thursday successfully held their second congressional sports invitational tournament dubbed “Sports Dual Meet 2018” at the House Sports Complex in Batasan Hills, Quezon City.
In his speech marking the opening of the whole-day sports event, House Secretary General Atty. Cesar Strait Pareja welcomed the contingents, officials and employees of the Senate and House, tournament organizers, and officiating referees.
Pareja exhorted the House and Senate players to not only play the game with the highest standards of discipline and sportsmanship, but also to maintain friendship and camaraderie.
Pareja cited a quote from Jesse Owens, an American track and field athlete and four-time gold medalist in the 1936 Olympic Games, that “Friendships are born on the field of athletic strife, and the real gold of competition. Awards become corroded, friends gather no dust.”
Senate Deputy Secretary for External Affairs and Relations Enrique Luis Papa officially declared the opening of the tournament.
The House won in the following games: men’s volleyball; women’s and men’s doubles, and mixed doubles badminton; and men’s doubles table tennis.
The Senate won in the women’s volleyball, dart, and chess games. The different chess matches were officiated by the Fédération Internationale des Échecs or World Chess Federation and the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.
