Duterte wants Go to run for senator

Special Assistant to the President Christopher "Bong" Go (right) speaks to supporters before attending a Senate hearing on the frigate controversy in February.

I WILL support him to the hilt.

This was the answer of President Rodrigo Duterte when asked by a visitor to comment if his special assistant, Christopher “Bong” Go, will run for senator.

Go confirmed Duterte’s statement in a phone patched speech to the Ready Set Go 2019 gathering in Intramuros, Manila on Wednesday.

The Special Assistant to the President (SAP) also quoted Duterte as saying, “I want him to grow also.” With those words, Go said he cried. He described the president as very unselfish to legislators and cabinet officials who went to the Ready Set Go 2019, the launch pad for his senatorial run.

Presidential Communications and Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Andanar, who was one of the staunchest prime movers of the event, told the crowd at the event that he was present when Duterte made the remarks.

The ruling party, Partido Demokratikong Pilipino (PDP), is throwing full support to Go’s senate run and its secretary general, Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, was among the first to announce he will convince the national photo bomber and SAP to run for senator.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano, who was at the event to endorse Go’s candidacy, said the Senate is helping the President but more dynamic people, who can move faster to push the needed legislation for the country to move forward, are needed in the Senate.

Go is weighing the snowballing call for him to join the Senate race next year.

“Bigyan nyo ako ng konting panahon,” said the SAP. “Kung gusto nyo akong tumakbo, unahin nyo na lang ang mga kasamahan ko sa gabinete. Huli na lang po ako, unahin nyo na lang sila.”

Go said that for now he just wants to do his job and in attending to the requests for help and grievances of the public as concurrent head of the Presidential Management Staff under the Office of the President.

“Trabaho lang muna tayo,” he said.

“Hindi ko iiwan ang pangulo. Hanggang sa pagtanda nya, sasamahan ko siya,” Go added.

Go appealed to everyone to help the President in fulfill his goals.

“Samahan natin ang pangulo, tulungan natin siya na matupad ang mga hangarin niyang pagbabago,” he said.

Go described Duterte as “nagpapakamatay sa trabaho” as the President visited the wake of a police officer who was killed in a buy-bust operation even when he was already tired fromt he day’s activities.

“Whether the slain officer is a PO1 or PO2, we will go there,” Go quoted Duterte as telling him.

Go lamented that human rights officials never make such visit when a police officer is killed but when a drug suspect is killed, they blame it to the President.

Go said he was very thankful for the overwhelming and sincere support of friends who want him to run for senator. He assured them that whether he runs or not, he would be their SAP.

“Huwag kayong mag-aalala. Magpapaiwan ako as SAP ninyo. Senator of the Philippines or Senator and Assistant to the President. Kung hindi ko kapalaran, pwede nyo naman akong maging Super Assistant of the People,” said Go.

Go closed his speech by thanking all supporters who gathered at the Ready Set Go 2019 event and asked everyone to help the President in the fight against illegal drugs, crimes and corruption.

“No to drugs, no to crimes, and no to corruption. Go for sports,” he said.
