MIMAROPA ‘Palaro’ back in Mindoro after 48 years

A TOTAL of 4,217 athletes from Palawan, Puerto Princesa City, Oriental Mindoro, Romblon, Marinduque, Calapan City and Occidental Mindoro are competing in the 2018 MIMAROPA Regional Athletic Association Sports Meet at the Occidental Mindoro Sports Complex in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro from March 12 to 16, 2018.

Occidental Mindoro has the biggest delegation with 1,226 athletes, coaches, and trainers followed by Oriental Mindoro with 630. Palawan came in 3rd with a total of 619 delegates; Puerto Princesa City come in next with a total of 585. Calapan City has a total of 440 delegates while Romblon and Marinduque sent 387 and 330 delegates, respectively.

The annual athletic event, formerly known as the Southern Tagalog Athletic Association or STAA, was last held in Occidental Mindoro in 1970.

Rep. Josephine Ramirez-Sato on Monday opened the event and commended organizers for aptly choosing this year’s theme for the sporting event: “Becoming A Champion Through Winning Attitude”.

“To my mind, a winning attitude is about being competitive and determined and unyielding in the face of a challenge. Masipag at matiyaga, at hindi umaatras sa anumang laban. Manalo o matalo, sports lang,” Sato said.

According to Sato, defeat should not be a reason to yield or surrender – in sports or in life’s everyday struggle.

Sato, a former governor of Occidental Mindoro, also urged stakeholders in the MIMAROPA Region to take the sporting event as an opportunity to show their athletic skills and talent while enhancing individual and team competitiveness to win but should also bear in mind the need for cooperation and to work together to ensure regional growth and development for MIMAROPA being its citizenry.

Governor Gene Mendiola and Vice Governor Peter Alfaro also welcomed the participants and specials guests on March 12.

The event was graced by Senator Loren Legarda as keynote speaker and guest of honor and other key officials of Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Romblon, Marinduque, and Palawan.
