SENATE President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III on Saturday asked Filipinos to help reduce the incidence of dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases by taking simple preventive measures recommended by the Department of Health (DOH).
Mosquitoes are vectors for diseases such as dengue, malaria, and Japanese encephalitis.
“Simply cleaning our immediate surroundings and removing objects where water can collect and become stagnant would have immediate health benefits, not to mention contribute to the beautification of the community”, said Pimentel.
Mosquito species that bear diseases usually lay their eggs on stagnant or slow-flowing water.
Dengue has been on front page news in recent weeks due to the investigation on the dengue immunization program of the previous administration.
Pimentel said, “Vaccines and medicines are not the only way to deal with diseases. I hope that the media will make use of the heightened awareness of dengue to spread information on how simple practices can significantly contribute to keeping our citizens healthy.”
