Speaker calls Bautista ‘scheming’

House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez voting to impeach Comelec Chair Andres Bautista in the plenary session on Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2017.

House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez called Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Andres Bautista scheming on Thursday because his letter of resignation allegedly tries to evade his impeachment.

“Ay nanloloko talaga, very scheming nga itong tao nito. Tama yung asawa niya, talagang scheming,” Alvarez said, referring to Bautista, in an interview with Noli de Castro over DZMM.

Alvarez said Bautista’s announcement Wednesday that he is resigning was an attempt to preempt the House plenary deliberation of a committee report dismissing the impeachment complaint against him.

Alvarez said that if Bautista is really serious of resigning as Comelec chair, he should have resigned today.

The Speaker also said the resignation letter Bautista showed on his Facebook page is “open” or allows him to recall it because he did not specify the year when his resignation takes effect.

“Alam mo Kabayan, masyadong scheming ‘yung pagkakagawa ng sinasabing resignation letter. Marami pong butas yun,” said Alvarez. “Nakakatakot yung mga ganyang tao.”

By not indicating the end of this year as the date of his resignation, Alvarez said Bautista can later say that he did not indicate the year when he will resign.

“Ilagay mo diyan malinaw. Alam mo Kabayan, maaring marami tayong naloloko pero hindi lahat ng tao naloloko natin,” said Alvarez.

The Speaker rejected Bautista’s reason for delaying his resignation, which is to give President Duterte time to find a replacement.

On Wednesday, the House in plenary voted 137-75 to overturn the Committee of Justice’s report dismissing the impeachment complaint against Bautista filed by his estranged wife.

The voting followed the announcement of Bautista that he is resigning by the end of the year for the sake of his children.
