Former Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief of staff and retired general Roy Cimatu was appointed secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) on Monday.

President Rodrigo Duterte announced the appointment in a cabinet meeting in Malacanang.

Duterte previously announced his appointment of Cimatu as special envoy for overseas Filipino workers in distress during his speech opening the Palarong Pambansa in Antique on April 23.

Cimatu also held the role of special envoy to OFWs during the Arroyo administration.

Duterte originally appointed Gina Lopez as DENR secretary but the Commission on Appointments last week voted not to confirm her appointment during the third hearing on her confirmation.
