President Duterte is expected to announce shortly the involvement of some 50 local government officials in the narcotics trade, according to the Department of Justice.
The list is said to include governors and mayors who have been under surveillance by intelligence agencies. Evidence gathered have proven their links to drug syndicates, the DOJ said.
If this comes to pass, then the current campaign against illegal drugs shifts to higher gear, especially if the officials are criminally charged. This would also demonstrate government’s firm resolve to put an end to the drug menace, a key component of President Duterte’s campaign platform.
While we wait for the President’s announcement, the police should already prepare the handcuffs for the erring officials.
