NINE personalities are set to be declared national artists by President Aquino in a ceremony happening this Thursday in Malacanang.
This is the biggest batch ever to be acknowledged and given the Order of National Artists (ONA) awards since 1972.
Those to be accorded ONA award include Cirilo Bautista (literature), Alice G. Reyes (dance), Ramon Santos (music), Jose Maria Zaragoza (architecture), Francisco Feliciano (music), Francisco V. Coching (visual arts, posthumous).
In 2009, Manuel Conde had also been given same acknowledgement for his invaluable contribution to cinema, and so were Federico Aguilar Alcuaz for visual arts and Lazaro Francisco for literature.
The Cultural Center of the Philippines Board and the o National Commission on the Culture and the Arts are the ones that determine final ONA nominees whom the President will proclaim.
Surviving national artists are being given monthly pension, medical and hospitalization benefits. Meanwhile, dead awardees will be rewarded with posthumous and insurance awards.
